Canadian Woman Arrested at Lagos Airport for Allegedly Importing Cannabis
A Canadian national, Adrienne Munju, has been apprehended by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for allegedly attempting to smuggle synthetic cannabis into Nigeria. The arrest took place on October 3 during passenger clearance at the Lagos airport’s Terminal 1. Munju was reportedly on a KLM flight from Canada.
According to a statement released by Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s spokesperson, Munju, 41, was found with 74 parcels of synthetic cannabis weighing a total of 35.20 kg. The illicit drugs were hidden in two of her three pieces of luggage. During interrogation, Munju allegedly confessed that she had been recruited online to deliver the package for a fee of 10,000 Canadian dollars. She claimed financial struggles due to her master’s degree program prompted her to accept the offer.
In addition to this arrest, the NDLEA also intercepted a significant shipment of opioids and codeine-based cough syrup at the Port Harcourt ports in Rivers state. The agency seized over 13 million pills of various opioids, including Tramadol, with an estimated street value of more than N9 billion. The drugs were found in three containers from India after a thorough joint inspection.
Similarly, NDLEA operatives at Lagos’s Tincan seaport intercepted a shipment of Canadian Loud cannabis weighing 50 kg. The drugs, concealed in a container with imported vehicles, were discovered following intelligence that led officers to a warehouse in Ikorodu, where a Toyota Sienna bus was found with the illicit substance. A suspect, Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim, has been detained in connection with the seizure.
