Shettima Orders Comprehensive Overhaul of Road Safety Measures
Vice President Kashim Shettima has directed a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s road safety protocols. This directive was issued during a meeting on Friday with the leadership of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), led by Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
A statement released by Shettima’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, revealed that the overhaul aims to tackle the country’s road safety challenges and significantly reduce road traffic accidents.
As part of this initiative, the Vice President will inaugurate the National Road Safety Advisory Council, which has been tasked with reducing road traffic accidents by 50% by 2030. During the meeting, Shettima emphasized the need for innovative solutions and stricter adherence to traffic laws to curb the rising number of accidents. He referenced successful road safety models in countries like the UK and Dubai, where traffic violators are tracked through technology and fines are deducted directly from their bank accounts.
Shettima also pointed out that road safety is closely linked to national security, highlighting the collaboration needed between the FRSC and the Nigerian Police. He praised the security architecture established in Enugu state as an example of effective coordination.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed noted that the National Road Safety Advisory Council is a key component of the updated Nigeria Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030, with a focus on setting national road safety targets and coordinating efforts across federal, state, and local levels.
