Tinubu Submits Tax Reform Bills to National Assembly, Proposes Renaming FIRS to NRS
President Bola Tinubu has sent four executive tax reform bills to the National Assembly, including a proposal to rename the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). The bills were presented to the Senate and House of Representatives by their respective leaders, Godswill Akpabio and Tajudeen Abbas.
The “Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill” seeks to repeal the FIRS Establishment Act of 2007, establishing the NRS to handle revenue collection for the federal government. Other bills in the package include the Nigeria Tax Bill, which aims to provide a consolidated fiscal framework, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill for efficient tax law administration, and the Joint Revenue Board Bill, which would establish key bodies for tax dispute resolution and harmonization.
President Tinubu emphasized that these reforms would improve tax compliance, strengthen fiscal institutions, and boost the economy. He urged the National Assembly to swiftly pass the bills.
