In a surprising turn of events ahead of the October 5 local government elections in Rivers State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have joined forces against Governor Sim Fubara. Both parties are opposing the governor’s decision to proceed with the elections, citing ongoing court cases and legal challenges as reasons to halt the process.
Members of the PDP and APC gathered at the PDP secretariat in Port Harcourt on October 3 to protest, calling for the cancellation of the polls due to concerns over their legality. Leaders from both parties, including APC caretaker committee chairman Tony Okocha and PDP state chairman Chukwuemeka Aaron, declared their withdrawal from the election, arguing that it is tainted by irregularities.
Governor Fubara, however, remains determined to proceed, citing a court order that mandates the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to conduct the elections. Despite rising tensions and the potential for unrest, the governor has reaffirmed his commitment to holding the elections as scheduled.
