President Bola Tinubu swore in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as Nigeria’s 23rd Chief Justice during a ceremony held at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, on Monday. Justice Kekere-Ekun becomes the second woman in the nation’s history to hold the position. Following her confirmation by the Senate, Tinubu emphasized the judiciary’s key role in maintaining Nigeria’s democracy and pledged to safeguard its independence.
He praised the judiciary’s role as a moderating force in ensuring accountability within the democratic system. Tinubu committed to ensuring the judiciary remains free from interference by the executive or legislative branches, highlighting the importance of maintaining its independence for a functioning constitutional democracy.
Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s dedication to improving the working conditions of judicial officers, stressing the need for continued ethical leadership in the judiciary. He commended Justice Kekere-Ekun for her career-long commitment to justice, citing her rise as an inspiration to women in a male-dominated profession.
The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and former Chief Justices of Nigeria.
