PDP Criticizes APC for Undermining Independence as Nigeria Celebrates 64 Years
As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for stifling the core principles of independence. The PDP urged Nigerians to use this occasion to reignite their sense of nationalism and defend democracy against what it describes as the rising authoritarianism imposed by the APC.
In a statement issued on Monday, the PDP called on citizens not to succumb to the oppressive tactics of the APC government, which it claims aims to undermine the Constitution, weaken democratic institutions, and treat citizens as subservient.
Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, emphasized that true independence is not merely a series of ceremonial parades and speeches but the freedom for citizens to express themselves, engage in legitimate pursuits, and participate fully in elections. He underscored that the essence of independence lies in a government’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and guarantee the rights of its citizens.
The PDP criticized the APC for its “anti-people policies,” asserting that the ruling party has diminished the essence of independence through actions that have led to increased hardship for Nigerians. It accused the APC of reverting the nation to a state of oppression, where dissent is quashed and corruption thrives.
The statement highlighted that the PDP, during its time in power, made significant strides in enhancing democracy, good governance, and living standards, achievements that the PDP claims have been rolled back under the APC.
The party urged the APC to acknowledge Nigeria’s sovereignty, which belongs to its people, and called for a review of policies that have been detrimental to citizens’ welfare. It also urged the federal government to reduce fuel prices and stabilize the Naira to revitalize the economy.
In conclusion, the PDP appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to heed the suffering of the people and prioritize projects that directly improve their lives, affirming that Nigerians deserve better as free citizens of an independent nation.
