There is currently a significant security presence at the Edo State Government House on Osadebe Avenue, following reports that Philip Shaibu, the former Deputy Governor, plans to return to office. Shaibu had been removed from his position by the Edo State House of Assembly after a dispute with Governor Godwin Obaseki. However, Shaibu challenged the decision in court, and a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice J.K. Omotosho, ruled that his removal was unlawful and ordered his reinstatement. Despite the ruling, the state government has yet to comply, citing an appeal.
On Monday morning, visitors and government staff were seen walking long distances after parking their vehicles outside the restricted area, as security operatives blocked access to the government premises. Only security vehicles were allowed to move freely within the area. An anonymous government worker expressed surprise at the increased security measures around the government house.
