Social media users in Nigeria have recently criticized Edo State Governor-elect Monday Okpebholo and Deputy Governor-elect Dennis Idahosa after a video surfaced of them kneeling to greet President Bola Tinubu during a visit to Aso Rock. The visit, which took place on Thursday, was intended to present their certificates of return to the President, following their receipt of the certificates from INEC.
The video, shared on social media by the President’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, sparked heated discussions online. Many users expressed displeasure, questioning why elected officials would kneel before the president in what they described as a “demeaning” display, likening it to behavior more fitting in a monarchy than a democracy.
Various users shared their views, expressing concerns about the state of Nigeria’s leadership and political culture. Some argued that the act blurred the lines between democratic governance and a system of fealty to a ruler, while others lamented the current political climate in the country.
