The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) has strongly urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the recent increase in petrol prices, expressing concern over its detrimental effects on millions of Nigerians.
In a communiqué signed by Chairman Dr. Samuel Gani, the group warned that if the price hike is not reversed, it could lead to significant economic and social repercussions. They highlighted how the rise in fuel costs has exacerbated poverty and hardship nationwide, contributing to inflation in essential goods such as food and transportation.
“We urge President Tinubu to rethink the recent petrol price increase, which has greatly escalated the costs of food and other basic necessities. The government must act swiftly to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, especially the most vulnerable,” the statement read.
The NCEF pointed out that Nigeria’s poverty rate rose to 38.9% in 2023, partly as a result of the fuel price hike, which has further strained household finances.
The forum also noted that the recent protests across the country are fueled by widespread frustration over the rising cost of living. “The protests we are witnessing stem from the severe hardship caused by the increase in fuel prices. Many Nigerians can no longer afford basic necessities, and the government must recognize the urgency of this situation,” Dr. Gani cautioned.
Additionally, the NCEF raised concerns about escalating insecurity in rural areas, particularly affecting farmers, who play a crucial role in Nigeria’s food security. They called for more effective measures to protect these farmers, as the current government actions have proven insufficient. “Farmers are facing serious security threats, and we urge the government to enhance their protection to ensure Nigeria’s food supply is not further compromised,” the forum stated.
