Former Senator Shehu Sani has responded to the recent increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, which rose from N33,000 to N77,000.
According to reports, the federal government announced the adjustment on Wednesday through a statement by Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at NYSC. The new rate will be effective from July 2024.
Reacting on his official X account, Sani, who has become a vocal public commentator since leaving the Senate, praised the government for the increment. However, he also suggested that female corps members should receive a higher allowance, proposing N100,000, citing the additional challenges they face.
In his post, Sani stated, “The increase in the allowance for Youth Corps members to N77k is commendable. But the allowance for female corps members should have been raised to N100k, as they endure more hardships.”
