Socio-political activist Aisha Yesufu has criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki for expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome of the Edo State governorship election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
Okpebholo secured victory in 11 local government areas, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, won in 7. Labour Party (LP) candidate, Olumide Akpata, did not win any local government areas. INEC’s Returning Officer, Professor Faruk Adamu Kuta, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, officially announced Okpebholo as the winner.
According to INEC, Okpebholo received 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes, and Akpata, who obtained 18,737 votes. Earlier reports detailed how Obaseki unexpectedly visited INEC’s collation center around 2 a.m. on Sunday but was escorted out by 4:10 a.m. by security personnel, including a team led by DIG Frank Mbah and the Nigerian Army.
Obaseki stated that his visit was to obtain firsthand information about the election process. In response, Aisha Yesufu took to X (formerly Twitter) to mock Obaseki, highlighting his actions during his time in office, including refusing to swear in 14 Edo House of Assembly members and judges, and overseeing the impeachment of his deputy governor.
“Yesufu wrote, ‘I’m looking for a video where Obaseki was speaking about the principles of democracy. Please share if you have it.’ She continued, ‘Obaseki, who refused to swear in 14 lawmakers and only swore in 5 out of 8 judges, is now talking about democracy under threat.’”
Meanwhile, both President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari have congratulated the APC governor-elect, celebrating the party’s victory.
