Dr. Pedro Obaseki, Deputy Director General of the Asue/Ogie PDP Edo 2024 Campaign Management Council, has minimized Nyesom Wike’s influence beyond Rivers State, arguing that Wike’s reputation is overstated. He raised doubts about Wike’s ability to influence the gubernatorial race in Lagos, labeling him as just a “motor park guy” and claiming that he would encounter significant opposition in Benin. He expressed concern that Wike’s apparent lack of humility could ultimately lead to his downfall, reminding him that his rise from Obio-Akpor to his current position was due to divine grace. Obaseki highlighted his own academic accomplishments well before Wike’s university days. In an interview with TVC, he stated, “Who is he? Is he a Benin man? Can Wike decide who becomes governor of Lagos? You’re all exaggerating his significance. Let him come to Benin; he’ll see what happens. He’s just a ‘motor park guy.’ Regarding Wike, I want to quote Chinua Achebe: those who have had nuts cracked for them by benevolent spirits should remember to be humble. I hope one day Wike doesn’t become a victim of his own arrogance. He should be thankful that someone from a humble background like Obio-Akpor has achieved so much by God’s grace. I was already a university lecturer when Wike was just entering his second year. He needs to calm down. I have no time for him, and I won’t even engage with him.”
