The Presidency has refuted claims that President Bola Tinubu requested Yemi Cardoso to step down as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the allegation was dismissed as false. Onanuga took to his official X account on Tuesday to denounce the report, labeling it as completely untrue.
“The claims are entirely fabricated. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign,” Onanuga stated.
The initial report suggested that Tinubu had instructed Cardoso to resign prior to his trip to China, despite intervention from influential Yoruba figures in support of keeping Cardoso in office. This came after criticism of the CBN governor’s handling of the country’s economic challenges and the naira’s instability.
