In a statement issued on Wednesday by Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, it was confirmed that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello decided to respond to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invitation after consulting with his family, legal team, and political associates.
Bello, who had previously been declared wanted over allegations of money laundering and corruption involving N80.2 billion, appeared before the EFCC following these discussions. The statement emphasized that his previous actions were taken to safeguard his fundamental human rights and ensure due process. He reiterated his commitment to the rule of law.
The statement further explained, “The case has been ongoing in a competent court, with Alhaji Yahaya Bello being represented by his legal team at each hearing. He has now chosen to meet with the EFCC to clear his name, as he has nothing to hide or fear.”
Bello also voiced his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, commending its efforts to promote economic growth and fight corruption. He noted that his tenure in Kogi State was the first to establish anti-corruption measures aimed at preventing the misuse of public funds for the benefit of the people.
Bello arrived at the EFCC headquarters accompanied by several notable figures. His media office expressed optimism that the commission would respect his fundamental rights during their interactions. More details regarding his meeting with the EFCC are expected to emerge in the coming days.
