The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the tragic deaths of 25 individuals following a fatal accident in Saminaka, located in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Kaduna State FRSC Sector Commander, Kabir Nadabo, shared the details of the incident with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, noting that the crash took place on Sunday at around 1:00 p.m. near LEA Primary School in Lere.
Commander Nadabo explained that the accident involved a J5 bus, with registration number NSL 08 AA, carrying 63 passengers. The bus collided with a DAF trailer, which bore the registration number DKA 454 XY.
Upon receiving information about the crash, a combined rescue team made up of FRSC officials, the police, and the Kaduna State Traffic Laws Enforcement Authority (KASTLEA) promptly arrived at the scene at approximately 1:08 p.m. The area was reportedly crowded with travellers celebrating the Maulud festival.
Initial investigations revealed that the J5 bus driver, who was speeding, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the trailer.
“Fifteen individuals were declared dead at the scene, while 48 others suffered varying degrees of injuries. They were transported to the Comprehensive Hospital Saminaka for medical treatment. Due to the seriousness of some injuries, several victims were later referred to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Shika, as well as the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for more advanced care,” Nadabo said.
Tragically, by 6:45 p.m. on Monday, the FRSC had received further updates confirming the deaths of an additional 10 victims, bringing the total death toll to 25.
Nadabo expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. He reiterated the FRSC’s strong stance against overloading and excessive speeding, stressing that many accidents could be prevented through adherence to safety regulations.
He also thanked the media for their continued efforts in promoting road safety and affirmed the FRSC’s commitment to ensuring the safety of road users in Kaduna and beyond.
