Three of Nigeria’s former military heads of state held a private meeting in Minna, Niger State, yesterday to deliberate on the country’s current security concerns and political landscape. The closed-door session took place at the residence of former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB).
Present at the meeting were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and former National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Gusau.
Reports indicate that Babangida and the other generals were awaiting Obasanjo’s arrival at IBB’s residence before the discussions commenced.
Although no official statement was issued regarding the meeting’s content, insiders believe the discussions revolved around Nigeria’s escalating security challenges.
It is also speculated that the refusal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to sign a peace agreement ahead of the Edo State governorship election on September 21, 2024, was a key item on the agenda.
The meeting, which reportedly lasted about two hours, concluded with Obasanjo heading back to Abuja. He arrived at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Airport around 4:30 PM, flying in a Gulfstream 5 aircraft, said to have been arranged for the meeting.
Following the session, Obasanjo left Minna at approximately 6:30 PM, with the Niger State government providing transportation to and from IBB’s residence. His departure for Abuja was confirmed at around 7 PM.
