It was a moment of joy and celebration for the entire staff, management, parents, and students of Phidel College, Isheri, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, following the school’s outstanding performance in the recently released West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
For the past 10 years, Phidel College has consistently demystified WAEC exams with its record-breaking performances. The school has achieved a 100 percent success rate each year, making it a model of academic excellence within Lagos State and beyond.
As expected, the recently released 2024 WASSCE results followed this trend, with all 43 students passing with flying colors. The top two students achieved seven A1s and two Bs, while even the least-performing students recorded four A1s, four Bs, and one C, further cementing the school’s legacy of stellar results not only in WAEC exams but also in other international assessments.
Phidel College’s principal, Mr. Olowo Olalekan, expressed pride in the school’s consistent 100 percent success in the WASSCE, noting that this has become the institution’s trademark. He emphasized that the achievement aligns with the founder’s vision of nurturing the next generation of leaders.
Despite the remarkable performance, Mr. Olalekan acknowledged that the school’s goal was to achieve nine A1s across the board, an ambition they continue to work towards. He shared, “We aimed for nine A1s, but we’re proud of the results. We’ll keep pushing until we reach that target.”
The top students, Imuze Esther Omoyeme and Jimba Aunjolaoluwa Rachael, both 16 years old, led the cohort with seven A1s and two Bs. They attributed their success to hard work, support from their teachers, and the grace of God. Omoyeme expressed gratitude for her teachers’ dedication, while Rachael shared that her determination to excel in WASSCE was driven by a previous setback in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
Other notable performers included Lanre-Agbedeji Olamide, Nwosu Amanda, and Tiemo Editimi, all of whom recorded six A1s and three Bs, as well as several others with five A1s and multiple Bs.
At a time when many schools struggle with poor results, Phidel College has unlocked the secret to academic excellence, consistently producing top performers in the WASSCE. Principal Olalekan credited the success to a combination of divine favor, hard work, and a structured academic system that prepares students rigorously for their exams. The school employs a strategy that includes year-round revision, targeted interventions for struggling students, and extensive use of past questions to ensure students are well-prepared.
The school’s chairman, Pastor Ayodele Philip Adelusi, praised the dedication of the teachers, who he said are driven by passion rather than monetary incentives. He emphasized that the management is committed to ensuring staff welfare, which has fostered a supportive and motivated teaching environment. Adelusi also called on the government to provide financial support to private schools, noting that the rising cost of operations due to the economic situation in the country is impacting their ability to offer even more to their students.
Phidel College’s unwavering commitment to excellence and holistic education continues to set it apart as a beacon of academic success in Nigeria.
