Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria, has criticized President Bola Tinubu for neglecting terrorists and other non-state actors while focusing on prosecuting protesters for treason.
On Wednesday, Atiku Abubakar criticized President Bola Tinubu for his handling of the Boko Haram crisis in Yobe and other northern states, blaming the government for the escalating violence. In a statement posted on X, Atiku expressed concern that while Boko Haram’s attacks continue to ravage northern regions, including Katsina, Sokoto, and other areas, the government is preoccupied with prosecuting protesters for treason.
Atiku condemned the federal government’s focus on suppressing dissent instead of addressing the serious threats posed by Boko Haram. His remarks followed a recent attack by the militant group in Yobe that resulted in over a hundred deaths.
The trial of ten hunger protesters facing treason charges has sparked public outrage. Amnesty International has denounced these charges as an attempt by Tinubu’s government to manipulate the justice system and suppress criticism. The organization criticized the charges, including the death penalty, as absurd and unfounded.
Court documents show that the protesters, including Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye and others, are accused of conspiring to destabilize Nigeria, with potential consequences including execution if convicted.
